George Santos is Out, But New York House Republicans Don’t Deserve a Victory Lap

Reps. Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams Were All Too Happy to Enable George Santos Until He Became Politically Inconvenient

NEW YORK — Today, the House of Representatives voted to expel freshman Representative George Santos from Congress, with 206 Democrats and 105 Republicans voting in favor of the resolution. While New York House Republicans have begun to denounce Santos over the past few weeks, they were all too happy to turn a blind eye for nearly an entire year while their constituents begged them to take action.

Santos’ impending expulsion comes after nearly a full year of grassroots activism and protests by local Long Island residents:

  • A coalition of over a dozen local groups was formed, including Concerned Citizens of NY-03, Students Against Santos, MoveOn, NY Working Families Party, 1199SEIU, Long Island Progressive Coalition, Empire State Voices, Courage for America, Common Defense, Reach Out America, Long Island Activists, and Bend the Arc: Jewish Action.

  • Activists held 16 unique in-district protests and other events, holding Rep. Santos accountable for his many lies.

  • Residents published more than 15 letters to the editor and op-eds in local papers imploring his Republican colleagues to take action.

Maria Martinez, Executive Director for Empire State Voices released the following statement:
“As Representatives like Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams scramble to take credit for the expulsion of George Santos, it’s important to remember that it was only once Santos started to become politically inconvenient for them that took any action at all.

It’s because of the tireless activism of so many local residents and advocacy groups that the people of New York’s 3rd Congressional District are finally free of George Santos. It was their hard work—holding protests and press conferences, writing letters and op-eds—that built the steady drumbeat of attention around Rep. Santos that brought us to today.”
