New York House Republicans Just Voted to Make it Easier for the Ultra-Rich to Cheat on Their Taxes… Again.

Reps. Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams All Voted to Strip the IRS of Critical Funding, Potentially Adding Billions to the National Deficit

NEW YORK — With the help of the New York GOP delegation, House Republicans just passed a bill cutting $14.3 billion in funding to the IRS. According to the Congressional Budget Office, these cuts will add billions of dollars to the national deficit by reducing the amount of revenue the IRS is able to collect from corporations and wealthy individuals.

Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, released the following statement:
“Once again, New York Republicans Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams are showing where their true priorities lie: making it easier for the richest Americans to cheat on their taxes. New Yorkers deserve representatives who will fight to make life better for them and their families. Instead, these three Congressmen are siding with corporations, the ultra-wealthy, and a handful of hard-right extremists over the working people of their districts."

The IRS received $80 billion in additional funding as part of last year’s Inflation Reduction Act, allowing the agency to modernize its systems and hire additional staff in an effort to crack down on ultra-wealthy and corporate tax cheats. This funding has gone a long way toward reducing the federal deficit, as every dollar spent on the IRS returns more than two dollars in revenue.

House Republicans have been laser-focused on stripping the IRS of this much-needed funding, making it easier for the rich to cheat on their taxes and adding billions to the deficit. Their very first bill, after taking the majority earlier this year, was an attempt to repeal nearly all of this $80 billion. House Republicans tried again in April, passing a bill to raise the debt ceiling that included similar cuts to IRS funding. When that too failed, they threatened to force the country to default on its debts unless they were able to cut $21 billion from the agency. Today’s legislation is just the next step in this crusade.
