The Inflation Reduction Act: A Year of Success That New York House Republicans Are Desperate to Repeal

Maria Martinez: “In their endless effort to prioritize their wealthy corporate donors, New York House Republicans have once again proven that they couldn’t care less about the everyday working New Yorkers they’re supposed to represent.”

NEW YORK — One year ago today, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act, improving healthcare coverage and lowering prescription drug costs for tens of millions of Americans and kicking off the largest investment in climate change action in history by incentivizing clean energy projects around the country. These investments were paid for by instituting a minimum tax on corporations, cracking down on ultra-wealthy tax cheats, and empowering Medicare to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices.

Clean energy investments from the Inflation Reduction Act have already spurred over $100 billion in private investment across New York, creating more than 13,500 high-paying jobs. The IRA has also significantly driven down healthcare costs for families across the state, lowering or eliminating premiums for low-income New Yorkers, capping out-of-pocket costs for seniors, and expanding Medicare coverage.

Despite this historic windfall for New Yorkers, New York House Republicans have been working tirelessly to undermine the IRA. Reps. George Santos, Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams all voiced opposition to the legislation from the campaign trail. Since taking office, all four have voted to repeal large portions of the law, attempting to rescind the funding for the IRS to go after wealthy and corporate tax cheats and claw back key investments intended to address climate change.

Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, released the following statement:
“In just its first year, the Inflation Reduction Act has proven to be an incredibly successful piece of legislation, reducing healthcare costs for millions of New Yorkers and creating thousands of high-paying jobs across the state. In their endless effort to prioritize their wealthy corporate donors, New York House Republicans have once again proven that they couldn’t care less about the everyday working New Yorkers they’re supposed to represent and have instead continuously tried to repeal key provisions of this critical legislation.”
