Statement: Empire State Voices on House Passage of Debt Limit Bill

NEW YORK — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill to raise the debt limit, just days before the projected default deadline. The legislation comes after House Republicans threatened to default on America’s debts unless they secured significant funding cuts for critical programs relied on by millions of working New Yorkers and their families.

New York Representatives George Santos (NY-03), Anthony D’Esposito (NY-04), Marc Molinaro (NY-19), and Brandon Williams (NY-22) all voted for these cuts last month, despite the measurable harm it will have on their own constituents.

Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, had this to say:
“It’s shameful that Speaker Kevin McCarthy and his fellow House Republicans have held America’s economy hostage for months in order to force through a bill that ultimately makes it easier for billionaires to cheat on their taxes while endangering the food security of hundreds of thousands of working people. It’s clear once and for all who the Republican party is really fighting for—and it’s not you or me.

New York House Republicans should be embarrassed to have supported this effort, especially those who have repeatedly claimed to care about the working-class constituents in their districts. Today, Representatives D’Esposito, Molinaro, and Williams have proven that they care more about corporate special interests and the ultra-wealthy than they do about everyday New Yorkers.

They are a threat to the state of New York and must be held accountable for consistently putting their party and corporate special interests over those of their constituents.”
