As the Nation Celebrates 14 Years of the Affordable Care Act, Opponents Take Aim Once Again

New York House Republicans are Opposing Efforts to Lower Drug Prices and Insurance Costs for Working Families

NEW YORK — Today, March 23rd, 2024, marks 14 years since President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law. Thanks to the ACA, millions of Americans have been able to access affordable healthcare coverage that would have otherwise been out of reach. Just this year, more than a quarter million New Yorkers signed up for health insurance through the ACA marketplace.

Despite its overwhelming popularity, the Affordable Care Act has received fierce Republican opposition since its inception. Republicans have voted over 70 times to try to repeal or significantly alter the legislation. Just this week, the Republican Study Committee released a proposal that would repeal ACA tax credits created by President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.

Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, released the following statement:
“The Affordable Care Act is one of the only reasons that millions of working people across the country are able to access and afford health insurance. That so many House Republicans seem laser-focused on getting rid of it is appalling. Healthcare costs in this country are astronomical, and New York Representatives like Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams need to focus their efforts on expanding on the foundation that the ACA created, not on tearing it down.
