STATEMENT: New Yorkers Made Their Voices Heard, Republicans Retreated From Proposed Funding Cuts
Despite a Six-Month-Long Attempt to Slash Government Funding, Extreme Republicans Failed to Overcome the Voices of Grassroots Activists
NEW YORK — Today, after six months of Republican infighting, the House of Representatives finally passed the last of the appropriations bills needed to fund the government for the 2024 fiscal year. This significant delay, which has caused the 118th Congress to be one of the least productive in U.S. history, is thanks to the efforts of a cohort of extreme Republicans who have been dead-set on slashing funding to key programs and agencies, from nutrition assistance programs and K-12 education to the Social Security Administration and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, released the following statement:
“The passage of today’s appropriations bill is an undeniable victory for grassroots organizations and activists across New York. For the past six months, we’ve joined with partners across the state to raise awareness around the harmful cuts that Republicans like Reps. Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams have been trying to inflict on working-class communities. They tried to cut nutrition assistance. They tried to cut housing support. They even tried to cut funding for the Social Security Administration. But we stood firm and made sure our voices were heard. Today, the voices of working New Yorkers won out.”
