President Trump Guts the Department of Education

Hundreds of Thousands of New York Students Rely on DoEd Programs & Funding

NEW YORK — Yesterday, the Trump Administration sent out a “reduction in force” notice to members of the Department of Education, eliminating nearly half the department in a single swoop. This drastic action follows weeks of chaotic cuts to various government agencies and departments by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

New York receives nearly $1.5 billion from the Department of Education each year through Title I alone, funding programs and resources for more than 120,000 students.

"As a former public school teacher for over 30 years, I know firsthand how Department of Education programs have been a bedrock of our public education system here in New York,” said Lorraine Attias, a retired schoolteacher from East Meadow, NY. “If these programs were to be cut or abolished, it would not only hurt teachers, but parents and students alike here on Long Island. Our communities rely on these programs. I ask the Trump administration to reverse this policy."

“Yesterday’s action by the Trump Administration is just the latest step in a series of attacks on the wellbeing of New York’s children and their families,’” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “From cutting funding for childcare, healthcare, and food assistance, to this reckless gutting of the Department of Education, President Trump and the so-called ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ have worked relentlessly to dismantle the programs and services that support hardworking families across New York. This isn’t ‘government efficiency,’ it’s a direct attack on poor and middle class New Yorkers.”
