Who Will Protect the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau?

New Yorkers Raise the Alarm as DOGE Takes a Sledgehammer to the CFPB

NEW YORK — This week, the newly created Department of Government Efficiency—which is not an official department—set about dismantling the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. While the bureau’s headquarters remains shuttered, DOGE has initiated layoffs of over 100 employees, promising more to come.

“Since its creation following the 2008 financial crash, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has worked to make sure that working people like you and me aren’t ripped off by big banks and corporations looking to make a quick buck,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “Now, Donald Trump and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency have made sure that it’s open season on regular New Yorkers and their families. They’re trying to ensure that banks and corporations are free to lie, cheat, and steal, leaving the rest of us to suffer the consequences.”
