TARIFF TROUBLE: New Yorkers Raise Awareness Around the Devastating Impact of Trump’s Proposed Tariffs

President Trump Has Threatened to Impose Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China Beginning February 1st

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK — This Saturday, as Syracuse fans arrived at the JMA Dome, they were greeted by a large mobile billboard from Empire State Voices, warning of the dangers of President Trump’s proposed tariffs.

Trump’s plan, which he had initially promised to enact through executive order on day one but has since punted to February 1st, would impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10% tariff on goods from China. If implemented, these tariffs could see the price of everyday goods skyrocket—from groceries and gas to clothing, electronics, and prescription drugs—as companies pass the cost of tariffs onto American consumers.

“Dozens of corporations and their well-paid CEOs have already announced plans to pass the cost of Trump’s tariffs onto American consumers, leaving New York families with higher prices and even tighter budgets,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “Tariffs are not a tax on foreign countries, as President Trump would like people to believe. They are a tax on American workers and their families, plain and simple. It’s important that people understand that and make their voices heard.”

Trump’s tariffs are all in an effort to pay for additional tax cuts for billionaires and corporations. His signature piece of legislation from his first term, the 2017 Republican Tax Law, gives the richest Americans a tax break 120 times larger than that for middle-income families. By imposing tariffs on imported goods and raising prices on working people, Trump hopes to raise enough money to give the ultra-wealthy even more.
