Trump Threatens to Hold Disaster Relief Hostage in Order to Pass Tax Cuts for Billionaires

Congressional Republicans Plan to Tie California Wildfire Relief Funds to Massive Tax Cuts for Corporations and the Wealthy

NEW YORK — House Republicans have announced plans to tie disaster relief funds for the California wildfires to a reconciliation bill that will include the majority of President Trump’s second term agenda. Primarily: more tax cuts for corporations and billionaires. Faced with razor-thin margins in both chambers, Republicans in Congress hope to force Democratic support for their controversial tax legislation by holding critical relief funds hostage.

“At a time when New Yorkers are struggling with high prices on everything from gas and groceries to prescription drugs, President Trump is working to make sure his billionaire buddies pay even less, the rest of us be damned,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “Trump and Republicans in Congress know that their agenda of tax cuts for the rich is unpopular, so they’re holding the health and safety of the American people hostage. Today, it’s California, but what happens when the next hurricane hits New York? Will Donald Trump provide his home state with critical disaster relief, or will he use the suffering of New Yorkers as yet another bargaining chip?”
