Empire State Voices Donates Coats and Winter Clothing to Binghamton Residents In Need

While Rep. Molinaro Prioritizes Corporations and the Wealthy, Empire State Voices is Giving Back to Residents in Upstate New York

BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK — This winter, Empire State Voices held a coat and winter clothing drive, purchasing hundreds of dollars worth of coats and collecting dozens of donations from community members across Upstate New York to be donated to the Stakeholders of Broome County. The donated items are being distributed to unhoused residents in the Binghamton area as temperatures continue to plummet in Upstate New York.

“With representatives like Marc Molinaro failing to do enough to address the needs of housing insecure residents in our communities, more and more people are being forced out into the cold and onto the street,” said Callisto Hess, a representative for the Stakeholders of Broome County. “We need radical action to ensure that our unhoused neighbors receive life-saving supplies in the form of winter survival gear before they quite literally freeze to death.”

Although inflation has come down substantially since its peak in the summer of 2022, many New Yorkers are still struggling to make ends meet. While some renters saw a dip in their housing costs during the pandemic, the past few years have seen rent prices continue to climb once more, leaving thousands of housing-insecure residents in Upstate New York facing eviction and homelessness.

“Winter can be tough on us all, but these cold months are hardest on the members of our community experiencing homelessness,” said Spencer Noble, NY-19 Regional Organizing Director for Empire State Voices. “It’s infuriating to see Congressman Molinaro go down to Washington and vote to cut funding for housing assistance programs while people in his district suffer. The people of Upstate New York desperately need their representative to fight for the expansion of programs that keep New Yorkers housed, not whittle them away. While we call on Rep. Molinaro to start fighting for his most vulnerable constituents, we’re doing our best to help fill the gaps.”
