New Year, Same New York House Republicans: Unable to Pass Necessary Funding Bills, GOP Kicks the Can Down the Road AGAIN

New York Reps. Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams are Still Trying to Cut Essential Programs Their Constituents Rely On

NEW YORK — Today, New York House Republicans D’Esposito, Molinaro and Williams passed yet another continuing resolution on government funding, narrowly avoiding Friday’s deadline and a partial government shutdown. This is the third time that Congress has resorted to a continuing resolution for 2024 funding, despite Speaker Johnson’s promise back in November that there would be no more short-term extensions.

House Republicans have been unable to pass the necessary appropriations bills because of persistent in-fighting, with far-right members demanding deep cuts to a wide slew of programs and agencies. Proposals from Republicans include cuts to the Social Security Administration and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as well as pulling funding from food, energy, and housing assistance for families in need.

Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, released the following statement:
“New York Congressmen Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams spent much of their first year in office siding with the extreme wing of their party, voting to cut funding for the programs and agencies that regular, working families in New York rely on. The inability of House Republicans to do something as basic as funding the government aside, this internal clash will be the first test of 2024 for these New York Representatives. Any vote in favor of additional cuts or conditions to funding these essential programs is a vote against the hardworking New Yorkers these men are supposed to represent.”
