Six Years Later, the Trump Tax Scam is Still Hurting Working New Yorkers

With Tax Cuts for the Ultra-Rich Set to Expire in 2025, House Republicans are Scrambling to Make Them Permanent

NEW YORK — Today marks the 6-year anniversary of the Trump Tax Scam being signed into law. Misleadingly named “The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,” the law was a massive corporate handout, adding an estimated $1-$2 trillion to the debt. Nearly all of its benefits were directed to the ultra-wealthy, providing next to no relief to working people and those in need.

New York House Republicans kicked off this year by passing even more tax breaks for corporations. Freshman Congressmen Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams all voted for H.R. 1, which would give oil and gas companies $6 billion in tax breaks, while also voting repeatedly to strip the IRS of the funding needed to go after ultra-wealthy and corporate tax cheats.

“Marc Molinaro and these other New York Republicans keep saying that they’re looking out for New Yorkers, but all they seem to do is vote to lower taxes for massive corporations while leaving small business owners like me to fend for ourselves,” said Antonio, a resident of Saugerties, NY. “They need to stop looking out for the rich and powerful and start fighting for working New York families who are just trying to make ends meet. Jeff Bezos has enough yachts! Why don’t you help out some of your constituents instead?”

Several major provisions of the Trump Tax Scam are set to expire at the end of 2025, but House Republicans are already jumping into action. New York Congressman Brandon Williams, a multimillionaire, is cosponsoring the TCJA Permanency Act, which would permanently extend the tax benefits for the ultra-wealthy.

“The Trump Tax Scam is a perfect example of how the priorities of New York House Republicans are not aligned with those of their constituents,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “Rather than work to protect and expand programs like Social Security and Medicare that millions of New Yorkers rely on, Representatives Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams keep working to help the ultra-rich avoid paying their fair share in taxes. Time and time again, working people only get crumbs while House Republicans give billionaires and massive corporations almost all of the benefits.”
