Empire State Voices Donates Winter Clothes, Blankets, and Board Games for Syracuse Families in Need

While New York House Republicans Prioritize Corporations and the Wealthy, Empire State Voices is Giving Back to Working Families in Central New York

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK — Today, Empire State Voices donated $1,000 worth of winter clothes, blankets, and board games to the Joe Family Foundation for Disability Advocacyand the Healthcare Education Project as part of their 'Home for the Holidays' donation drive. The donated items will be given to local Syracuse families in need ahead of the upcoming holidays.

Even though inflation has come down substantially since its peak last summer, many New York families are still struggling to make ends meet. According to a recent poll from Monmouth University, 55% of Americans are planning to cut back on holiday spending this year because of high prices. Trends like these are felt even harder in areas like Syracuse, which has the second-highest child poverty rate among large cities nationwide.

Despite this overwhelming need, New York House Republicans have focused their recent efforts in the House on helping the richest Americans and corporations avoid paying their fair share in taxes. When it comes to working families, however, they’ve been far less generous. Over just the past few months, New York House Republicans have voted to slash funding for housing, energy, and food assistance, as well as defund the agencies that administer Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits, raising costs for New York families and putting millions at risk.

“The Joe Family Foundation for Disability Advocacy and the Healthcare Education Project are partnering with community organizations to support children and their families during this holiday season,” said Latoya Jones, Founder of the Joe Family Foundation for Disability Advocacy and Upstate New York Lead for the Healthcare Education Project. “We hope to provide the gift of warmth to support individuals through the cold, hard CNY winter.”

“As we approach the holidays, working families across the state are struggling to make ends meet,” said Prerna Deer, NY-22 Regional Organizing Director for Empire State Voices. “While our representatives in Washington have failed to lower costs and relieve the burden on working-class New Yorkers, Empire State Voices is doing what we can to help support our neighbors here in Central New York.”
