Syracuse Billboard Calls Out Rep. Williams For Voting to Protect Rich Tax Cheats

Empire State Voices is Drawing Attention to the Congressman’s Record of Siding With Corporations and the Ultra-Wealthy Over Working Central New Yorkers

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK — Today, Empire State Voices unveiled a new billboard along I-690 in Syracuse, drawing attention to Representative Brandon Williams’ recent vote to protect rich tax cheats. The billboard, which will run for the next four weeks, is part of a statewide seven-figure paid media effort aimed at holding members of Congress accountable for siding with extremists like newly-elected Speaker Mike Johnson over the interests of working New Yorkers and educating constituents on their voting records.

“Brandon Williams hasn’t even been in office for a full year, but he’s already made it crystal clear that he isn’t interested in fighting for people like me,” said Ciara, a resident of Onondaga. “I work hard to make ends meet, provide for my family, and pay my taxes. So it feels like a stab in the back when the person who’s supposed to represent my interests in Congress is instead voting to make it easier for millionaires and billionaires to avoid paying their fair share. Rep. Williams needs to stop siding with the rich and powerful and start fighting for all of the hardworking New Yorkers who are just trying to get by.”

Since taking office in January, Rep. Williams has voted repeatedly to defund the IRS of the funding allocated in President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act last year. While Republicans have tried to claim these cuts are an effort to curb federal spending, the truth is that every dollar invested in the IRS returns more than two dollars in additional revenue by cracking down on wealthy tax dodgers. By clawing back this funding, House Republicans are making it easier for big corporations and the ultra-rich to cheat on their taxes and avoid paying their fair share.
