A Mike Johnson Speakership is Bad for Working New Yorkers
The Louisiana Republican Has Spent His Career Working Against the Interests of Working People, New York Republicans Just Gave Him the Gavel
NEW YORK — After three weeks of failed attempts to elect a Speaker, House Republicans have landed on far-right Representative Mike Johnson to take up the gavel. New York Reps. Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams all voted for the far-right Republican, who has spent years working against the interests of working people.
Rep. Johnson has supported tax cuts for the rich and large corporations, voted against lowering healthcare and prescription drug costs, and has even led efforts to raise the retirement age and cut Social Security and Medicare.
Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, released the following statement:
“A vote for Mike Johnson is a vote against working people, plain and simple. Throughout his time in Congress, Johnson has consistently voted against the interests of everyday Americans, from supporting tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy to opposing efforts to lower costs for working families. New York Reps. like Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams need to stop putting their partisan loyalties above the interests of the hardworking New Yorkers they’re supposed to represent.”
