Congressman Brandon Williams Votes for Far-Right Rep. Jim Jordan for Speaker

The So-Called ‘Political Outsider’ Has Fallen in Line Behind the Far-Right

NEW YORK — Congressman Brandon Williams has just voted to elect Representative Jim Jordan to be the next Speaker of the House. While Jordan failed to get enough votes to become Speaker, today’s vote proves that Rep. Williams is not the independent “political outsider” he claims to be.

Jim Jordan has spent his career fighting against the interests of working Americans. Jordan is a founding member and the current Vice Chair of the House Freedom Caucus, infamous for his role in stirring up far-right “culture wars” and his performative political stunts. He’s voted repeatedly to raise the retirement age and deprive hard-working Americans of their Social Security and Medicare benefits while supporting massive tax cuts for big corporations and the ultra-rich.

Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, released the following statement:
“Congressman Williams loves to paint himself as a ‘political outsider,’ but his vote for Jim Jordan proves that he’s just another far-right extremist. He’s abandoned any pretense of fighting for his constituents, voting instead to slash funding for programs that New Yorkers rely on and falling in line behind the far-right wing as they’ve plunged the House into chaos. A Jim Jordan Speakership would be catastrophic for working New Yorkers. Brandon Williams is no ‘political outsider’—he’s just another far-right extremist.”
