House Republicans Are Threatening to Use the Looming Shutdown as Leverage to Pass Their Extreme Agenda
NEW YORK — In just under three weeks, the U.S. government is set to run out of funding and be forced to shut down, shuttering or heavily impacting federal programs and threatening the livelihoods of millions of workers. Congress has until midnight on Saturday, September 30, to pass legislation to fund the government, most likely by passing a short-term continuing resolution to extend current funding levels until full appropriations bills can be negotiated.
House Republicans are threatening to use the looming shutdown as leverage to pass their extreme agenda. Despite attempts to distance themselves from the far-right House Freedom Caucus, New York Representatives Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams have all failed to come out against this reckless brinksmanship that threatens to hurt millions of New York families. Instead, they’ve fallen in line behind Kevin McCarthy and extreme MAGA Republicans, selling out their constituents and putting the livelihoods of millions of New Yorkers at risk.
“Last month, the U.S. received its second-ever credit downgrade because of this irresponsible Republican brinksmanship, and now they’re poised to do it again,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “Congressmen D’Esposito, Molinaro, and Williams are once again siding with the extremists on the far right of their party over their own constituents. They would rather hurt countless New York families than stand up to Republican leadership and fight for New Yorkers.”
“During an unprecedented affordability crisis, when working people are struggling just to put food on the table, Republicans are willing to prevent people from getting benefits they depend on—like social security and SNAP—because of political gamesmanship,” said Theo Oshiro, New York Working Families Party State Officer. “The GOP’s latest strategy is needless, cruel, and threatens to hurt millions of families."
