Empire State Voices, New York Advocate Groups Protest Outside George Santos’ Office, Highlight ‘One Year Post-Dobbs’

While Rep. Santos Hid Inside, Local Advocates Called on Him to Support the Women’s Health Protection Act

QUEENS, NEW YORK — Today, Empire State Voices joined a protest outside Representative George Santos’ Queens office, calling on him to support the Women’s Health Protection Act. ESV joined a coalition of local New York advocate groups—including MoveOn, Bend the Arc, and Reach Out America—as they demanded their Congressman defend the reproductive and economic rights of all his constituents.

This Saturday marked the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and stripped Americans of their constitutional right to abortion care. While there have been efforts in both the House and Senate to codify reproductive rights into law, Representative Santos called the proposal “the most perverse bill in the history of our country” in a since-deleted tweet.

“Abortion isn’t only a matter of civil rights and bodily autonomy—it’s also a kitchen-table economic issue,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “Whether or not to have a child is one of the biggest financial decisions of a person’s lifetime. Until reproductive rights are protected at the national level, working families in the state of New York and across the country will be living under constant threat of that decision being taken away from them.”
