Rep. Molinaro Just Broke His Promise to Protect SNAP

Republicans on the House Agriculture Committee Took Aim at the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Voting to Limit Future Benefit Increases

UPSTATE NEW YORK — Today, Congressman Marc Molinaro broke his promise to the people of Upstate New York by voting to limit future increases to benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Falling in line behind his Republican colleagues on the House Agriculture Committee, Rep. Molinaro voted to advance the long-awaited farm bill. The legislation includes provisions that limit future increases to the Thrifty Food Plan, a baseline grocery budget that determines the size of SNAP benefits. This move could have potentially dire consequences for New York families already struggling to make ends meet

Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, released the following statement:
“It doesn’t matter how you dress it up—a cut or limit to SNAP benefits will cause children and families in Upstate New York to go hungry. Congressman Molinaro made his position very clear: he pledged that he wouldn’t cut SNAP benefits. Now, he’s going back on that promise, leaving many families in Upstate New York to fend for themselves. New Yorkers need their representatives to fight for the programs they rely on, not to undermine them at every turn.”
