Rep. D’Esposito Claims He’d “Reject Any Attempt” to Cut Medicaid or Social Security… But He Already Voted To Do Just That

NASSAU COUNTY, NEW YORK — Following a rally led by Empire State Voices and Make the Road Action last Thursday, Congressman Anthony D’Esposito responded to the concerns of his constituents by releasing the following statement:

“Empire State Voices and their progressive allies lie to voters about my record as a scare tactic,” D’Esposito told Blank Slate Media in a statement, “but I have been clear since my first day in Congress that I will reject any attempts by either party to cut Medicaid or Social Security and that promise still stands.”

While we at Empire State Voices deeply appreciate the Congressman’s shoutout, our fear over his voting record is all too real—and we have the receipts!

Rep. D’Esposito has repeatedly promised that he would oppose any effort to cut Medicaid or Social Security, but just last year, he voted in favor of H.R. 2811, a bill that would have cut funding for the Social Security Administration AND the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This legislation would have cut Medicaid, plain and simple—imposing harsh new work requirements and putting coverage at risk for over 2.3 million New Yorkers, including more than 105,000 in Nassau County alone.

Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices, released the following statement:
“Congressman D’Esposito can complain all he wants, but all we’ve done is look at his record. He promised his constituents that he would oppose any cuts to Medicaid, then voted for those cuts the first chance he got. Rep. D’Esposito needs to stop making empty promises and begin actually fighting to protect these critical programs that families and working people across Long Island depend on.”
