Rep. Lawler Chooses Tariffs and Tax Breaks for Billionaires Over Medicaid, SNAP, Veterans’ Services
House Republicans Pass A Budget Plan That Threatens Hundreds of Billions in Medicaid Cuts
NEW YORK — Today, Representative Mike Lawler joined fellow House Republicans to pass yet another budget resolution prioritizing millionaires, billionaires, and large corporations over the needs of working New Yorkers. This comes after Republicans voted yesterday to give up their own authority to reign in President Trump’s reckless global trade war, defending his ability to impose and lift tariffs on a whim.
The budget plan, which closely resembles an earlier resolution passed in February, requires Republicans to make at least $1.5 trillion in funding cuts to critical social safety net programs, including a potential $880 billion cut to Medicaid, while extending $4.5 trillion in tax breaks overwhelmingly benefitting the richest Americans. Nearly 190,000 New Yorkers in the 17th Congressional District rely on either Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, both of which are now in peril because of Rep. Lawler’s vote.
“A large part of my career involved helping the uninsured and underinsured get Medicaid to ensure access to very needed medical services,” said Joan, a constituent from Pomona, NY, who is retired from a long career in healthcare. “I have seen first-hand the disastrous health outcomes of people who can't and won't seek medical care because they can't afford it or have sought medical care and subsequently suffered disastrous financial burdens due to bills they could not afford. By voting for today's resolution, Congressman Mike Lawler has failed his constituents and millions of other New Yorkers who so desperately rely on Medicaid.”
