THE TRUMP TAX: New Tariffs Will Force New Yorkers to Pay the Price

Rep. Lawler Aided and Abetted Trump’s Plan to Raise Costs for New York Families

NEW YORK — President Trump just announced yet another set of sweeping tariffs, the latest in his chaotic trade war with America’s trading partners. This newest round of tariffs, which apply to seemingly every country the U.S. does trade with, are expected to raise the price of many goods that New York families buy, as companies pass along the increased cost to consumers. From gas and groceries to clothing, electronics, and toys, New Yorkers will be paying more.

“New Yorkers are already battling a cost-of-living crisis that’s making it difficult just to afford the bare essentials—now this ‘Trump Tax’ will make it all but impossible,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “These tariffs mean New York families will go hungry, will struggle to pay their heat and utility bills, and won’t be able to afford the everyday purchases they used to take for granted. Congressman Lawler, you need to speak out against this immediately, before families go hungry and your own constituents suffer. It’s time to locate your backbone and stand up for New York families!”

Though Trump’s tariff plan will vary from country to country, the Yale Budget Lab has recently estimated that a 20% broad tariff would cost the average U.S. household anywhere from $3,400 to $4,200 annually. This broad increase in prices for everyday essentials amounts to a devastating tax increase on working families amid a worsening cost-of-living crisis. While Congress usually has the ability to review and overturn such actions, New York Congressman Mike Lawler joined his Republican colleagues last month to relinquish that authority.
