State of The Island: What Nassau County Residents REALLY Think About the State of the Union

Empire State Voices Got the Inside Scoop at Last Night’s State of the Union Watch Party in Rockville Centre

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NEW YORK — Last night, Long Island residents from across Nassau County joined Empire State Voices for a State of the Union watch party in Rockville Centre. Between snacks, drinks, and a rowdy game of State of the Union Bingo, attendees discussed President Biden’s speech, the current “State of Long Island,” and the legislative priorities they want to see their representative in Congress fight for over the coming year.

During his speech, the President highlighted some of the major accomplishments of his first term, including the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act, all of which have brought significant investment and high-paying jobs to New York.

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is a big freakin’ deal,” said Carter Ward, a resident of Hempstead. “I'm incredibly excited about all the investments in local projects and the jobs it will create in and around our community for years to come. I don’t think you can overstate just how important that is for a state like New York."

“It was great to hear President Biden discuss the Inflation Reduction Act and the ways it's keeping costs down here at home while fighting climate change,” said Michael Baumgarter, a resident of Baldwin. For Long Islanders struggling with the current cost-of-living crisis, it’s really important to know that our leaders are working to ease the burden on us and our families."

The biggest takeaway of the night, however, was the stark difference between the priorities of the Biden Administration and those of NY-04 Representative Anthony D’Esposito.

“With Long Island facing an affordability crisis, it's great to see the ways in which the Biden administration is fighting for working Long Islanders,” said Liz Stack, a resident of Rockville Centre. “It’s refreshing to see an elected official working for us. Now we just need Congressman D’Esposito to do the same for his constituents here in Nassau County."

“President Biden spoke on his track record of success for working people and laid out a vision for even further progress to be made,” said Dylan Wheeler, NY-04 Regional Organizing Director for Empire State Voices. “Long Islanders are desperate for leaders who will fight to lower their costs and build an economy that works for them. Congressman D’Esposito could learn a thing or two from tonight’s speech on the importance of prioritizing working families over corporations and the ultra-wealthy.”
