New Yorkers Worry as Trump’s Tariffs Threaten to Raise Grocery & Gas Prices
Trump’s Plan to Pay for Tax Breaks for the Rich Hits Working Families the Hardest!
NEW YORK — Today, President Trump gave up on his purported ‘negotiations’ with Canada and Mexico, putting in place 25% tariffs on all imported goods entering the United States from our two largest trading partners. These tariffs are expected to raise prices for New Yorkers on everything from gas and electricity to groceries and prescription drugs as companies pass the added costs on to consumers.
President Trump has presented his tariffs as a way to pay for tax cuts for the richest Americans.
“President Trump doesn’t care about making our lives better, and he certainly isn’t doing anything to make things more affordable for everyday New Yorkers. All he cares about is gutting the essential programs we rely on and raising costs for working families so that Republicans in Congress can pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “These tariffs will be paid by working families across New York, at the gas station, at the grocery store, and in countless places in between. Any member of Congress that aids in that agenda has abandoned their constituents and is betraying the very people whose interests they’ve sworn to represent.”
