ICYMI: IRS to Launch Free Tax Filing Pilot Program in New York Thanks to Inflation Reduction Act

New York Representatives Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams All Voted to Strip the IRS of Critical Funding

NEW YORK — Last week, the IRS announced that it is launching a free tax filing pilot program in 13 states next year, including New York. The program will serve as a free alternative to paid services offered by companies like Intuit TurboTax and H&R Block, making it easier and cheaper for working families to file their taxes. It’s part of a larger effort to modernize and improve the agency’s operations, made possible by funding received from last year’s Inflation Reduction Act.

As their very first vote in Congress, New York Representatives Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams all voted to repeal the vast majority of the Inflation Reduction Act’s funding for improving services and cracking down on wealthy tax cheats. When that failed, they tried again in May with the Default on America Act and are yet again pushing for cuts in the ongoing appropriations fight.

“It’s ridiculous that, in 2023, I have to pay hundreds of dollars to a private company just to file my taxes,” said Ciara, a resident of Onondaga. “It just goes to show how out of touch Brandon Williams is with the district he claims to represent. To be voting against making this process easier and more affordable for working families like mine is a slap in the face. Not all of us have truffle farm money, Brandon.”
