Ahead of Vance-Walz Debate, Airplane Banner Over Hudson River Draws Attention to Republican Tax Law

With All Eyes on New York, Empire State Voices is Highlighting the Harm Done by Republicans’ 2017 Tax Law

NEW YORK, NEW YORK — Yesterday, as anticipation grew ahead of the vice presidential debate, keen-eyed New Yorkers may have spotted a familiar airplane banner flying over the Hudson River.

The banner, which made its debut flight earlier this summer above Long Beach, is part of a statewide educational campaign led by Empire State Voices, highlighting the inequities of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The legislation is under scrutiny as Republicans in Congress fight to extend a slew of provisions prioritizing millionaires and billionaires that are set to expire next year.

“The Republican Tax Law was a devastating step backward for working New Yorkers, families, and anyone who didn’t already have a couple million in the bank,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “The 2017 law made the rich a lot richer and did next to nothing for everyone else. We’re using this opportunity, with all eyes on New York for the debate, to highlight the very real harm that this legislation has done. We encourage New Yorkers to contact their representatives and demand they oppose any attempts to make these provisions permanent.”

The Republican Tax Law was sold to the American people as an effort to reduce the burden on lower- and middle-class families. Despite these promises, the vast majority of the law’s benefits have gone to millionaires, billionaires, and corporations, leaving those most in need of relief to fend for themselves. While many of these provisions prioritizing the rich are set to expire in 2025, Republicans in Congress have already begun working to make them permanent.

At a time when four in five Americans support raising taxes on the rich and big corporations, Republicans in Congress continue to push for massive giveaways to the ultra-wealthy. Empire State Voices is working to raise awareness around the harm done by the Republican Tax Law and encourage New Yorkers to contact their representatives and make their voices heard.
