Rep. Molinaro Deflects and Distracts When Pressed on Impending Government Shutdown
The Congressman is Demanding Deep Cuts to Critical Programs, Forcing Sunday’s Shutdown
NEW YORK — Representative Marc Molinaro spoke to Yahoo Finance this afternoon about ongoing Republican demands over appropriations bills and the impending shutdown. When pressed on the complicity of GOP members in the House who have failed to come to an agreement on funding legislation, Rep. Molinaro deflected, attributing the current standstill to “deeply-held beliefs within the House Republican majority.”
These “deeply-held beliefs” seem to center around slashing federal funding for programs relied on by millions of New Yorkers and thousands of Rep. Molinaro’s own constituents. Molinaro doubled down on voting for the House Republican appropriations bills, which would cut education and childcare funding, gut housing and nutrition assistance, and make it more difficult to access Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security benefits.
“Representative Molinaro claimed today that ‘every step is being taken’ to avoid a government shutdown. That couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “Marc Molinaro has been in the heart of the storm these past few weeks, using this threat of a government shutdown to try and force through an agenda of extreme cuts that will harm the very people he’s supposed to represent. He needs to stop playing games with people’s lives and livelihoods.”
