President Trump Orders Dismantling of the Department of Education
Trump Promises ‘Uninterrupted Delivery of Services, Programs, and Benefits’ While Systematically Destroying the Agency Responsible for Doing So
NEW YORK — President Trump has just signed an executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take "all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education.” This comes after the Department of Education fired over 1,300 employees just last week.
New York receives nearly $1.5 billion from the Department of Education each year through Title I alone, funding programs and resources for more than 120,000 students. While Trump’s order calls for the “uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely,” that promise will likely be impossible to keep without the very department tasked with administering them.
“It’s astounding how much disdain President Trump seems to have for American children and their families,’” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “When you dismantle the agency responsible for administering programs and services to over 120,000 New York students, you threaten their future success and well-being. This is a direct attack on working families across New York, one that New York Republicans like Reps. Mike Lawler and Nick LaLota are obligated to stand up and fight against if they truly represent the best interest of their constituents.”
